  1. Mamals living in the park include beavers, coyotes, gray foxes, pronghorns, rock squirrels, mule deer, kangaroo rats, and mountain lions.  Local jackrabbits have extra-large ears that can be used as radiators, transferring heat out of their bodies to keep them cool.  Over 430 species of birds have been seen in the park.  Ducks and other water birds are abundant.  And the roadrunner, a large member of the cuckoo family that prefers to run rather than fly, can be seen racing throughout the desert.
